December 12, 2024, marked an exciting new chapter for Abidale as she debuted under the Covilar Owl Hollow Farm banner at Charles Town Racecourse. Entered in the 4th race, a $24,000 allowance optional claiming event at 7 furlongs, Abidale delivered a performance that showcased her competitive spirit and set the tone for what promises to be an impressive campaign.
Trained by up-and-coming horseman Ryan Gillespie and ridden by veteran jockey J.D. Acosta, Abidale was fresh off a nearly 80-day layoff. She drew post 8 and went off at long odds of 24-1, but from the moment the gates opened, she defied expectations. Breaking quickly, she took control of the race early, setting a steady pace of 24:83 seconds at the quarter pole while holding off challenges from race favorites and Waterloo Rose, another longshot at 14-1.
Although Abidale relinquished the lead in the closing strides to finish second behind Waterloo Rose, her effort was nothing short of remarkable. She crossed the wire with a finishing time of 1:27.50, paying $17.60 to place and $7.00 to show. Bettors who boxed the $1 exacta were rewarded with a substantial $165.50 payout.
Owner Dr. Josep Bassaganya-Riera and the entire Covilar Farm team were thrilled with her performance. “This was a fantastic start for Abidale under her new connections,” said Dr. Bassaganya-Riera. “Coming off a long layoff, she demonstrated incredible determination and talent. We are excited about her future with Ryan Gillespie at the helm.”
Ranked 50th by wins in 2023, Abidale is no stranger to success. Her race record includes nine wins and six placings from 28 starts, earning her a total of $196,798. This versatile mare has excelled at distances ranging from 6 ½ furlongs to 1 1/16 miles, making her a reliable competitor on tracks across the United States.
Born on February 1, 2019, Abidale boasts an impressive pedigree as a daughter of Cairo Prince, a descendant of Pioneer of the Nile, and out of the A.P. Indy-sired mare November. Her combination of speed, stamina, and heart makes her an exciting addition to the Covilar Owl Hollow Farm roster and an impressive future broodmare prospect.
Trainer Ryan Gillespie, a rising star in the industry, is enthusiastic about the road ahead. “For her first start in nearly three months, she showed incredible class,” Gillespie said. “I’m confident this is just the beginning. With her talent and determination, her next race will be even better.”
With Abidale in Gillespie’s capable hands and the support of Covilar Owl Hollow Farm, her 2025 campaign is shaping up to be one to watch. Her strong debut is a promising sign of things to come as she builds on her already impressive career.
